Always Look Your Best

dress up, show up

I was raised to always look and feel your best, no matter what.  That’s just me. Anybody else with me on this?

Quick story – So, the other night, my husband and I were in Lowe’s with our little one, waiting in line to be helped, and a lady (also in line) commented, I assume you both just came from work? I smiled, and said, “actually, I am at home with our little one now.” She immediately jabbed back and said “well, you look so nice, something must have taken the backseat, like the housework, something had to… I mean there’s no way you could look this nice everyday. There’s always a trade off, right, something will suffer.” At first, I laughed and said, “yeah, sure, most days, I don’t dress this nicely.” However, as we walked away I thought to myself, actually you do, why did you say that?  I will admit, I don’t wear a full face of make up anymore, but I do always make an effort to put on “real clothes” and not just live in the SAHM stereotype, yoga pants/greasy hair…she’s clearly given up on life look. I may not wash my hair every day or wear my dry clean only clothes, but I do use dry shampoo, and I have learned the art of mixing my old work wardrobe into a “Momiform.” My house is also pretty darn clean, too. And, I don’t have a cleaning service, either.

It is actually is possible to put yourself together either before your husband goes to work (I get up before anyone in the house has stirred), or while your little one is napping. Of course, I’m human, and sometimes can be caught in my pajamas until noon, but rest assured when my little one goes down for a nap, I put myself together. It takes less than 10 minutes on days that I don’t wash my hair. And, it’s also possible to be a great wife, Mom and still be true to yourself, too. You’ll be better at everything in your life, if you take care of yourself, too. You have to make time.

I love to dress up, style outfits, blog, and I won’t stop. I do wish the days were a little bit longer, so that I could accomplish everything I wanted to, but I’m soaking up every bit of being a wife and a mother. I guess I just happen to be dressed up, and I don’t feel a darn bit guilty about it.

I would also like to thank my amazing husband for all of his love and support everyday.

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas season! I’ve enjoyed a lot of quality family time, and I hope you were able to do the same. Christmas at home with my family brings me the most joy in the world. Seeing Christmas through our little one’s eyes is always so incredibly special.

Who’s excited about the new year ahead? I know I sure am. I love the feeling of a “fresh start!” To finally do all of those things you’ve wanted to do…

What are you most excited about this upcoming new year?

Raspberry-Almond Shortbread Cookies

Ever since having our little one (19 months ago), I haven’t been baking as much as I used to in the past. I think the main reason is the fact that I spend my days chasing after a busy little bee all day, nor, do I want the temptation around my house. After all, I have worked really hard to lose all of the baby weight. The extra calories are just not worth it in my mind.  And, I love my clothes that much.

However,  I do think about baking during nap time, but then I end up folding laundry or vacuuming instead (I know, oh so glamorous, right?). No, really, I love taking care of my little family.

Enough rambling for now, and back to the baking. I’ve never made thumbprint cookies. Have you? These look and sound delicious. So, I plan on making these this weekend.  Of course, much to my husband’s dismay, I will give most of them away, like I always do. I just love this time of year – the perfect excuse to bake for family and friends!

Ingredients:

1 cup butter, softened
2/3 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup seedless red raspberry jam
sugar for sprinkling
1 cup powdered sugar
3 to 4 teaspoons water
1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract

Directions:

1. In a medium bowl beat butter medium speed for about 30 seconds. Add the the 2/3 cup granulated sugar and 1/2 teaspoon almond extract. Beat until well combined. Beat in as much flour as you can with electric mixer and then using a wooden spoon stir in any remaining flour. Cover and chill for 1 hour or until dough is easy to handle.

2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Place balls 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Using your thumb, press an indentation into the center of each ball. Spoon about 1/2 teaspoon of the jam into each indentation and then sprinkle with sugar. Bake about 10 minutes or until edges are light brown. Cool on cookie sheets for 1 minute. Transfer cookies to wire racks to finish cooling.

3. For icing, in a medium bowl combine powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon water and 1 1/2 teaspoons almond extract. Add enough of the remaining water to make a drizzling consistency. Drizzle cookies with icing.

Draper James – Gift Guide

Raise your hand if you love Draper James as much as I do? Ok, now that we have that settled, let’s get into the gift giving mood, and narrow down a few favorites that anyone would love to find under the Christmas tree this year.

Happy Shopping & Receiving!

Journal Set
DJ journal set
I’ve kept a journal since I was a little girl. Writing in a journal is relaxing and peaceful to me. This set is darling, and the bow details are what sold me. If you have a friend who’s a writer, this would be a perfect gift!

Coaster Set

DJ Coaster Set
This coaster set is so cute. I just love gingham. The navy & white gingham would look very stylish on any coffee table or end tables. Since I’m also Southern, I just couldn’t resist the sayings either…

Holiday Fob

DJ Holiday Fob
This key fob is adorable, and it would look great added to any handbag or set of keys. I love the knot/tassel combo. Another great gift idea…don’t you think?

Orange Blossom Candle
DJ Candle
Who doesn’t love getting a candle? This scent sounds heavenly, and the classic jar could double as a makeup jar on your vanity after you’ve burned the candle! Two gifts in one…done and done!

Belle Detachable Faux-Fur Collar Coat
DJ Coat
Ok…so I had to sneak this one in the list, just because! This coat is amazing, and while I know I’ve been good this year, I’m not sure Santa will like the price tag, or it even being on my Christmas list…oh well, a girl can dream, right?

Banana Republic – My Top Picks

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday filled with love, laughter and the ones you hold near and dear.

Can you believe it’s December 1st? Bring on all of the Christmas cheer…

hello december

There are so many styles to choose from out there. As I’ve mentioned many times before, I tend to invest in more  “classic” pieces. Banana Republic is just that, for me at least. I am still wearing some pieces from them from many moons ago…literally.

So, since I’m a huge Banana Republic fan, I thought I would share some of their latest styles that I am in love with right now.

Flutter Sleeve Dress

BR Flutter Sleeve Dress
This picture does not do this dress justice. I had the chance to see it in person the other day, and it is simply stunning. It would be great for the holiday season. The sleeves though…they’re just so pretty.

Ruffle Front Blouse

BR Ruffle top
This top is so fun and feminine. The red is perfect for the holidays, and well after they’re gone. You know what they say, if you find something you like, buy it in every color, right? I’m not sure my husband would agree, do you?

Oversized Turtleneck Sweater

BR Oversized Turtleneck sweater
In my opinion, there’s nothing better than throwing on an oversized sweater on a cold, winter’s day . This would look darling dressed up, or paired with denim. There’s no such thing as too many turtleneck sweaters in your closet. You’ll wear them for years, trust me.

Crepe Fringe Top

BR Fringe Top
It’s all about the details…a blouse with fringe detail? Yes, please! This is a fantastic party top for the Christmas season and beyond. It also comes in black. And, you can wear it year round my friends. What girl wouldn’t be happy wearing this?

Pieced Jacquard Sleeveless Top

BR Jacquard Top
How beautiful is this top? I love the green, pink and navy print. A flattering fit for many. This would look great now, and even in the Summer with white denim. Love it.

Delicate Teardrop Necklace

BR Teardrop Necklace
This teardrop necklace is so simple and classic, and that’s why I’ve been drawn to it. A great everyday necklace. Also a good idea for a stocking stuffer for a sister or friend, too.

Monday, Monday

With the holidays in full swing it feels as though my head is spinning with feeling like I have a million things to do, and not enough time to do them. Do you ever feel that way? Of course, we all do. Either way, what doesn’t get done, can wait, and I plan to relax and enjoy the entire holiday season. This is going to be a busy, fun Thanksgiving and Christmas, and I cannot wait.

So, for today, I’ll share with you my random thoughts as of right now.

christmas_decor
First, I am holding back every ounce that I can to wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate for Christmas. Every time I see a house already decorated I try to justify it in my head to “go ahead,” however, the “traditionalist” in me won’t allow it. I know I need to wait, even though for me, Christmas is the happiest time of year. My parents made every Christmas truly “magical” for me, and I hope that my husband and I can do the same for our children. I will admit, I am already listening to Bing Crosby in the car. My husband is an incredibly patient man…

classic_looks
This has been my “go-to” look during the daytime as of late. I am all about denim, cozy sweaters, cute flats and a fabulous coat! It’s chic, yet still in style, just way more relaxed than I’ve ever been. I’ve got a feeling I’ll be living in this look all season long for shopping, play dates, etc. Although, don’t worry – I’m still looking forward to getting all dolled up for holiday parties! What seems to be your “go-to” daytime look lately?

 cheese plate_christmas_tree
A Christmas tree cheese plate! How happy is this idea? I came across this on Pinterest the other day. I’ll definitely be making this for any dinners at our house, and it would even be fun if you’re hosting a playgroup, too! The kids would love this…

And last, but not least…always a good reminder.
Actually, i can

Lace Up Flats

via

If you look at my closet today, it’s mostly full of heels from my days spent at an office. What girl doesn’t love a great pair of heels though, am I right? However, now that I spend my days chasing a toddler, I wear mostly flats (for now), and LOVE them just as much. I tend to wear dressier flats, and these lace up flats are my newest obsession.  This red pair above would be stunning for the holidays. They’re perfect paired with denim and skinny pants, which is my current daily uniform, that is, if I’m not in my workout clothing.

Nine West Lace up Flat

I love a good black flat. They come in blue and burgundy as well. The price point isn’t bad either for something so trendy.

Lace Up Ghillie Shoes
nude lace up flats

I love the detail trim on this pair. And, you can’t go wrong with a good nude flat. These scream “versatility” to me.

Elodie Lace Up Flats

Of course, I had to include a great animal print option. I love my animal print shoes, probably too much (is that such a bad thing? I don’t think so.) When in doubt, these are another great neutral to add to your closet/collection.

My Bucket: Half Full

Bucket Bag
via

Do you love a good bucket bag? Here’s the truth, I’ve always admired the “bucket bag” when others are carrying them, but here’s a little known fact about me; I’ve been a “tote” loyalist forever. For literally as long as I’ve been carrying a purse. One of the main reasons for this loyalty (besides loving symmetry and structure in everything regarding style), is because I like to make sure I have room for anything I could possibly need, at any given point. This is now more important than ever since my best friend/side kick everyday is my adorable toddler.

I’m willing to give this trend a try, but I don’t want to make a huge investment in this style until I know it’s going to work for me/us. So, I’ve rounded up a few, affordable bucket bags that I’m liking right now.

Faux Leather Bucket Bag
camel bucket bag
I love this camel color. It will go with everything, and I can wear this tan year round. It also comes in black, too.

Kiely Drawstring Bucket Bag
dolce vita
I really like the size of this one. It looks like it will hold a lot, and I can keep my phone in one of the side pockets for easy access.

If you have a favorite bucket bag, I would love to hear your thoughts/brand!

Happy Friday

Happy Friday!

It’s quite gloomy outside, but that means it’s the perfect excuse to stay inside and get stuff done around the house. If I do that, I really need to clean out my side of our closet. I just have the hardest time parting with clothing…no big surprise there, huh?! Do y’all have issues with this too?
If I don’t plan on doing what I should, then we plan to do a lot of relaxing this weekend. I bet you can guess what I’ll really be doing.  What are your plans? Enjoy!
